Native pepper berries are an Australian pepper that comes from the fruit of the Mountain Pepper plant. While most Australian pepper berries require hot wet climates, the pepperberry grows in much colder climates.
The smell of native pepper berries is much more earthy and moderately citrus compared to commercial peppercorns which are more spicy in comparison.
The whole pepper berries become a dark brown/black colour at harvest. Pepper berries become dark brown when ground take on a striking dark plum colour. The pepperberry used in the same way as general pepper to add spice and flavour while also having a slight herbal flavour towards the end. The deep plum colour is use commercially to add rich colour to sauces and Outback cuisine. The pepperberry is also found in many indigenous cuisines.
